When Andrew Weatherall tragically passed I felt a great sense of loss. We weren't what you would call friends. However, we had been acquaintances, for want of a better word, for over 10 years and had, in the previous 2 or 3 years become a lot closer. Andrew had taken a liking to the music I was making with Chris (Field Of Dreams) and was playing it, giving us advice, feedback on how tunes had gone down when he played them and, amazingly, agreed to remix one of our tunes.
He played at my club night and hugged me when he arrived the final time as if I was one of his oldest friends. He was due to do an ALFOS a few weeks after he passed. I've heard many stories since of him passing advice to everyone who he felt he could help. He was the greatest DJ of our times and a true gentleman. A man who lived for the music and was happy to pass on his knowledge and advice to all for no gain or kudos to himself but, in my view, to help keep that acid house spirit alive.
Anyway, I felt strange when he passed so, for the first time ever, I channelled my feelings into a tune. It's hard to explain as I've written or been involved in writing many tunes and never really got emotionally involved. I did the vocals in one take, even the harmonies, and know there are some slight key issues (I like that though!) and my piano playing isn't exactly Elton John. However, I feel it does get my emotions across.
I've decided to put it out now as many people have asked me what it was when I've played it on my radio shows. All money made will go to the homeless charity I support in Birmingham (I'm Homeless, get Me Out Of Here!
www.facebook.com/geoffbridge38). We've donated so much to them through ALFOS poster sales to date and I know Andrew would be very happy that the money was going there.
Buy it, get it for free, ignore it, it doesn't matter. Just putting it out there for anyone who likes it.
